The biggest issue a client would have is if your external ip changed, they would have to update the connection settings. Less hops on a route generally will increase performance. Where as if they go by ip address they would go Texas to California withiut having to go to NY. So if say you were in California the server was in NY and the client was in Texas, the client would go from Texas to NY to California. I suspect this is the behavior as in my experience, all my device perform better when i go directly to my server locally. Effectively i am going out to the internet to just come back locally. So if i am at my house house and i dont use local discovery or my servers local ip address i am effectively going from my client > back to my external ip > to server. When someone that has access to your server connects to, does a redirect (lack of better phrasing) to your ip. Your Plex server calls out to and says i am here (your external ip address).
